Stevenson One Game Away From Ford Field

By Nick Candela

It has been an incredible Cinderella story for Sterling Heights Stevenson. The Titans began the 2019 season 0-3 in conference and 3-4 overall. Since then, Coach Justin Newcomb, has had his team rolling and the Titans have now won five straight games. Their incredible playoff run began not knowing if the Titans would even qualify for the state tournament. At 5-4 on the season, they would not automatically be eligible for a playoff bid. However, the Titans would earn 67.556 playoff points, and learn that even at 5-4, they would be given a home game against their week 9 opponent Warren Mott in the Pre-District round of the MHSAA State Football Playoffs. After squeaking away with a week 9 victory over the Marauders (23-20) after a game winning 39 yard FG by Zach Imms, the Titans would have a rematch with the Marauders in week 10. It would be another close match-up, but the Titans would prevail 34-27 and move on to face MAC Red foe, Macomb Dakota for the District Championship. The Cougars defeated the Titans in week four, 40-14. The Titans would host, but play the role of underdog in the District match-up vs Dakota. The Cougars would lead 28-18 going into the 4th quarter, but the Titans defense came through and caused 3 turnovers in the game, and helped lead the Titans to a 38-35 come from behind victory. The Titans would win their first District Title since the 2009 State Championship Runner-Up season. Things would not get much easier for the Titans in the Regional Championship. Standing in the way of yet another wooden mitten trophy, would be the perennial powerhouse Technicians of Detroit Cass Tech. In a close game, the defense would yet again cause 3 big turnovers and Coach Newcomb would dig deep into the offensive playbook and a trick play double pass would be the difference maker, as the Titans unbelievably defeated the Technicians 9-7 to become Regional Champions for the first time since 2009.

There is now only one team standing in their way to getting back to Ford Field to play for a Division 1 State Championship. That team is the Davison Cardinals. The Cardinals lately, have been an absolute MAC Red killer! The Cardinals would defeat the Romeo Bulldogs 35-21 in the Pre-Districts and then go on to dominate the Eisenhower Eagles 35-7 in the Regional Championship. Davison is looking for their first ever State Final appearance. The Titans however, have been to three State Finals games, but have yet to win the coveted Title.

The Stevenson Titans will face the Davison Cardinals on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Troy Athens High School (4333 John R Rd, Troy, MI 48085).
