Macomb Preps

Week 3 Game of The Week Preview

By Nick Candela

The Macomb Preps week 3 Game of The Week could very well be considered the MAC White Championship game. The Warren Mott Marauders (2-0, MAC White) will host the reigning MAC White Champion, Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils (1-1, MAC White). The Marauders are coming off 2 blow out wins. A 35-6 victory over Ann Arbor Skyline (0-2, SEC Red) in week 1 and a week 2 45-6 stomping of division foe, L’Anse Creuse North (1-1, MAC White).  The Blue Devils were able to shake off a week 1 loss to Birmingham Groves (2-0, OAA White) and come back in week 2 with a dominating 35-0 win over Utica Ford (1-1, MAC White). Last season, Grosse Pointe South took this match-up in overwhelming fashion, shutting out the Marauders’ high powered offense 38-0. The Blue Devils are known for their dominating defense, which held MAC White opponents to only 23 points in all of 2018. Catch the action Friday night, 7:00 PM at Warren Mott High School. (3131 Twelve Mile Rd, Warren, MI 48092)

Players to watch:

Warren Mott is known for their team speed, and that speed has been on full display through the first 2 weeks of the season. Senior RB, Curtis Hamilton ran for 149 yards and a touchdown in week 2 vs LCN. He is a small but powerful back with explosive break away speed. Watch him to not only get the ball from the backfield, but catch the ball in the flats as well. Sr. TE/WR Jerren Hayes, WR/DB Romeo Jones and duo QB’s James Chaney and Dylan Vanconant wrap up the offensive players to watch. The defense for the Marauders is highlighted by 6’6″ 245 lb, Junior DE, Tyson Watson. Watson has already been given Division 1 offers by Iowa, Iowa State, Central Michigan and Kentucky. He will be visiting Notre Dame over the weekend. He is a shut down defensive end, and offenses should avoid him if at all possible.

For the Blue Devils, all eyes will be on Sophomore WR/CB Will Johnson. Johnson is a possession type WR for the Blue Devils. He seems to always be open when they need him to be. Johnson is also a dominant Corner Back who is not afraid to come up to the line and stick a running back. As a Sophomore, he already has several SEC and Big 10 offers from schools including, Kentucky, Purdue, Penn State, Michigan State and Michigan. Joining him at WR, is AJ Benson who is the main deep threat. In 2018 all 5 of his receiving touchdowns came on plays over 40 yards. Senior Quarterback, Alex Shaheen will lead the offense for the Blue Devils. He is an athletic QB with the ability to throw down field, has great patience in the pocket and has the speed to make a linebacker miss on a scramble.
