Week 5 Game of the Week Preview

By Nick Candela

Fee Fi Fo Fum! The week 5 Macomb Preps Game of the Week takes us to a clash of Macomb County Giants. The number 1 ranked team in the state (Detroit Free Press), Chippewa Valley Big Reds (4-0, 2-0, MAC Red) host their rivals, the Macomb Dakota Cougars (3-1, 2-0, MAC Red). This game will be the 32nd time the two teams will face off against one another. Though the Cougars hold the all time series lead (19-12), the Big Reds have dominated the Cougars the last 5 match ups by a combined score of 197-92, including playoffs. In fact, the last time Dakota got the best of the Big Reds, was a 48-27 victory in a 2016 Pre-District Playoff game. If headed out to this game, be sure to get there early as this game is sure to be at standing room only capacity, with some of the state of Michigan’s best talent on the field. Catch the action Friday night, 7:00 PM at Chippewa Valley High School (18300 19 Mile Rd, Clinton Twp, MI 48038).

Players to Watch:

The amount of talent on the field will be entertaining to say the least. Both teams have Division 1 college recruit caliber athletes on both sides of the ball. For Chippewa Valley, Senior Running Back, Myren Harris is as impressive a back as you will see in high school football. At 6ft. 200lbs he is a combination of speed and power for the Big Reds. Quarterback play from Senior, Josh Kulka is on point, as he is able to spread the ball or take off when called upon. On both sides of the ball look for big plays from Juniors Quillen Howze and Jaillen Howze. Quillen, a WR/CB is being heavily recruited, with offers from teams in the MAC, Big 10 and SEC. Jaillen Howze, OLB/S is getting offers from the MAC and gaining interest from the Big 10 as well.

For the Dakota Cougars, the development of Junior Quarterback, Zach Droski has been a thing of beauty to watch. A solidified gun slinger who is mobile enough to stay out of trouble and extend plays when needed. In the backfield with Droski, you will find a man among boys in Junior Running back De’Javion (DJ) Stepney. Stepney has the ability to make the choice of whether he wants to juke you out of your shoes, run you over or out run you with his speed. As a Junior, Stepney has already created some recruitment buzz, gaining offers from the MAC, ACC & AAC. Other players to watch for on this Dakota team are, Junior  WR/CB, Eric Reese, Senior WR, Gabe Mata and Senior LB/TE Camden Orlando.
